What do people with 88-91 vettes do about roller rockers and tall valve covers? I pulled the ac on mine because of clearance issues with the ac compressor. I suppose I could cut and weld the valve cover (well pay someone to do it), but alternative solution, could one run 85-87 ac setup since it's mounted in front of the head as opposed to on the side? Anyone out there done this?
what i did on my 89 was to relieve (grind) the a/c compressor bracket to allow the valve cover to come up and away from the a/c. if you look at the valve cover from the top and pull up on it, you can see where the bracket needs to be ground. use a marker to make a profile of what material needs to be removed then it becomes grind and fit, grind and fit.
I notched the bracket and have clearance for that but the actual compressor itself is what the clearance issue is for me. Can you send me a picture or two of your setup?
I'll look into that!! Thanks for the tip. I'm definitely going to feel like a bozo for pulling the ac if I could have just modified the stock covers! Live and learn.
I ran roller rockers under 'Vette valve covers by simply breaking the oil drip tabs off the insides of the valve covers. Worked fine, for me.
i was running roller rockers and a girdle. wasn't going to fit under stock covers and had to go to a tall cover which is what i did for the clearance and r&r of the covers.
I would never go back to the early r4 compressor, the Denso is much smother and quieter. For tall valve covers I had to grind just a little on the bracket where it was hitting the corner of the valve cover and used 3/8" spacers to move the compressor out away from the cover. I did use longer bolts, I didn't have the original bolts so I don't know if they would have worked.
