Diff noise
The noise I'm hearing is definitely diff noise, it's like putting your ear to a screwdriver handle while holding it on the diff casing
I can hear the lash effect noise changing between lightly accelerating , freewheeling and backing off the throttle, but it's a metal on metal noise, not a whine or hum
I live in the tropics and rubber doesn't like the heat. I've hardly driven the car for years because of poor health and this noise suddenly appeared and seemed to change during only 30 miles of short road testing around the suburbs
The rear sway bar rubber bush totally failed and it made a clonking sound on bumps and transmitted road noise when it was metal on metal
I can't see how a diff bearing could fail when it sits in oil and hasn't been driven. When I do drive I don't drive hard, no hard starts or competition driving etc
I'd appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has had a bush fail on the batwing or part connected to the diff, before I take it to a mechanic and put it up on a hoist.
I'd like to be prepared beforehand to know what to check and look for.
1988 Auto, standard Dana36 with Posi LSD. I've had the car since 2003. I've replaced the dog bone bushes, sway bar bushes. It has new wheel bearings and UJ's.
The most important part of my post is 'The noise is like putting your ear to a screwdriver handle while holding it on the diff casing'
