If you mod your engine you will need a after market chip. There are guys here on the forum that will charge you way less then the big boys. Ski-down-it is one sof the guy that will make one for you.
Not worth the money you pay for them, unless youve heavily modded the motor (cam, heads, intake).
:nono: I disagree. I have a friend with a 93(93TorchRedC4)that bought a stage 2 chip from Ed Wright and it completely woke his STOCK car up. I've been in the car before and after, and will attest to the difference. Yes heavy mods will obviously make a difference, but you can have chips burned to change the performance of a stock engine. :yesnod:
I have not ordered mine yet, but I'm leaning towards having ski-down-it burn one for me. His name is Jesse, and he seems to be very willing to work with someone if they want to tune and test their setups. It never hurts to talk to people about their service, so drop Jesse a line. I think he will be very helpful for you.
I wouldn't give Ed Wright any of my cash... not when Bryan at http://www.PCMforless.com does the same thing for 1/2 the price... and yes, I've tried both of them in my car.
I'd stick with the stock chip unless your engine mods require a custom one. I tried a Jet stage II chip and it did nothing for my 1/4 mile times. Needless to say, I'm running the stocker again now :yesnod:
Stock mapping tables were developed balancing performance, driveability, fuel economy, reliability, emissions. With no other changes to air flow, (ie heads and cam) you could see some performance gains in certain areas. Depends on where the chip makes the changes.
With no dyno time, (also expensive) lots of variables.
Chip tuning MAY well gain some performance, but how does this change other factors.
I would save my money for a really good scanner. BUT, scanners don't make the car go faster.
My Hypertech yielded a gain of 0.00 seconds and 0.0mph in the 1/4 mile over the stock chip. Yes, you read that correctly, NO GAIN.
Chips made custom by someone like Ed Wright is a whole different ball game.
The best way to go is to spend the money on PROM burning equipment and learn how to make your own. The cost of all the equipment you need wil be less than one aftermarket chip. This means you can have an infinite amount of chips burned for less than the price of one aftermarket chip.
Craig Marchio made a chip for my 85 with the only mods being a ported MAF, Cat Back, cut lid, hei /accell coil, better Taylor plug wires, gutted cat and it offered noticeably better performance, NO pinging, anda much nicer/stronger acceleration etc .
Also I had a Hypertech chip in before that and it was a PITA, BTW I have that chip for sell cheap!
Bought my own gear and will be doing it myself. Might as well, since I do all the other work to it too. Hotcam and P/P heads will be done if Feb/Mar timeframe, so I'll be needing some chips then. I am running a copy of my stock chip now that I burned myself, so the process works. Time to do the tweaking and learn to burn.
