I replaced mine yesterday-the entire job took ~45 minutes. I removed both left side tail light housings and had very good access to the antenna. I only had to get on my back for a couple of minutes to wiggle the antenna out the bottom of the rear quater panel. I don't know if removing the tail light housings is simple on the 84-90, it was very easy on my '94.
Turn the ignition on and turn the radio on. Now turn the radio off. If the motor runs and stops and the antenna still won't move it may be just the mast. Might be worth it to check.
It is really a pretty simple job. Remove rear speaker and cover on driver side for access to the cable. jack car up, remove rear tire. remove inside fender well. Then you will have easy access to remove the antenna.
That price on ebay looks pretty good. You spend twice that for a factory one.

Re: antenna replacement tips (alphado)
I put in a Hirschman antenna. It works fine but you will need an adaptor to connect the two coaxials. Also, you will need a schematic to hook the two power wires to the antenna power relay. You have to splice them in. :yesnod:
