Hello, Im glad you got it open! Mine did that once too because the locks were sticking and I applied grease to the locks. I never had anymore trouble with them. You have a nice car and I took a picture of my car today after I rebuilt the transmission. All the drive train was overhauled in 2020 but 80% of the car is original.

Good deal! I have to believe that while "old" plastic that our hood release handles have become, may be the culprit here and there when they break, but why are they breaking? I believe it's cable adjustment or lack of it. This causes the owner to over extend the articulation of the hood release handle to get the cables to travel far enough to release the latches. When greasing the latches and adding the emergency release tethers, take a look at the cable sheath and the adjustment on the end! Most C4s I've seen with the hood up have a lot of "slop" at the cable end, this ends up making the cable travel doing essentially nothing the first 1/4"-3/4" of it's movement. So you end up not having enough travel to "unlatch" the hood pins or barely enough and are stressing/maxing out the hood release mechanism! Adjust

Adjust here to shorten or lengthen the cable!
the cables so their "stops" are right up against the clips, not under " tension" but right before! Every C4 owner should pop their hood and take a look, by doing this to mine, the "throw" on my hood latch is "right there" barely have to pull on it and hood pops right up (make sure to do both sides)👍
