Exhausts are strange. Some people are more sensitive to drone than others. I flat out find it absolutely obnoxious. And the only options I have found that work on *my* modded cars. Headers/cats/corsa. Headers/stock exhaust system. Both of these combinations work to keep the drone down. And shockingly enough, the cat back with headers doesn't rob as much power as people expect it does.
I have flowmasters on my mostly stock '87 convertible. Just a little rumble, no drone even with the top down. I also have a '90 coupe that I put Walker quiet flows on. Very close to stock sound. Corsa is nice, but it's a significant percentage of what I paid for either car.

I think you are right. Best we can do is use a decibel meter to gauge at various RPM. What we cannot do is tell if you find it obnoxious or not. If you cater to the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" group, anything short of illegal is good and the closer to the noise limit the better it is for them to impress the rice boys. What we cannot tell is how you will like the exhaust noise. Some like this and others like that.

I always tell people to try and get a ride in a similar car to listen to the exhaust sounds. I had a Corsa on my 95, then transferred to my GS. I always thought the sound was tinny, but no drone with the stock cube LT4. Once I out in the 396, longtubes, no cats it was crazy loud and wouldn't pass tech at Englishtown for noise. I put on a 3" magnaflow and it was a deeper sound with minimal drone. Now I went with a bigger cam and heads at that has crazy drone now. I swapped out the magnaflow mufflers for another brand that is actually 3" not stepped down but haven't been able to drive it yet.
383 with TPIS long tube headers and a Magnaflow cat and Corsa cat back. It is way better and seems more acceptable even at idle to 2000 which was horrible with the Borla

Working in and around E-town I'm suprised there was a tech for sound. I always thought they let you run it as loud as possible.. I did a lot of work in those developments right by 9 at union Hill which is a good 2 miles away and I could hear it clear as day lol. I loved it but could see others not.

Bunch of "loud pipes save lives" come running by at night and people change their minds pretty quickly about it.
Few years ago I needed to replace the OEM mufflers on my '88. Went to the local Chevy dealer and was told that OEM mufflers are no longer available. The parts guy recommended Corsa so I had their cat back installed.
Good sounds, life-time warrantee and zero drone so well worth the price.
True! After many years on my '96 the middle crossover pipe ruptured on an end. Called Corsa and got a replacement within days. Only sent a picture to them. That is service that is difficult to find these days. Only Corsa for me and any future vehicles.

my residential dead end street is used for local test and tune by reckless hooligans all the time around 2 am. One day a brick will go flying through their windshield while they're doing 110 in a 25 and that'll be the end of them. That being said, c17s doing touch and go's flying around my house all night is 100x worse than any vehicle I've ever experienced. I can pretty much sleep through anything.

What's your local cops doing? Donut shop got a 2 for 1 special? I know some towns rigidly enforce Jake Brake rules because the trucks come by on a straight intersection and play with them instead of slowing down way back when.

like 2 officers on duty at night. Generally they're busy with other crap. Big town land wise, not enough guys. It doesn't happen regularly enough to pin it down either. I pretty much know who it is and I don't think he can ever legally have a license again either so like how further can they go.

I grew up knowing that government always looks at the squeeky wheel (complaints), you said he most likely lost his coupon, but does the POPO know he's still driving?
Not trying to hi jack thread, I myself have been living with the C4 drone for over 20 years ( muffler eliminators) but they do sound good rowing through the gears

Tell them you think you heard a gunshot and watch them run.

Maybe but maybe he needs to lose more. I am fine if you want to play. When it's "Lights Out" and it disturbs me, it becomes a problem. When it disturbs a bunch of people, it becomes a bigger problem. Took the bike to a HD dealership for a dyno tune. I had to sign a waiver because of those "Loud Pipes Save Lives" morons who insisted on revving the motor at all hours of the night. Now there are restrictions and my muffler was not stock so either I sign a waiver to take all responsibility or they don't test it out on the street. Personally, I don't care if you think it sound good. Pipe it into your cabin for all I care. I believe they have electronics to simulate the engine and/or exhaust noise. After say 9pm, knock it off.

I was stationed at McGuire as a crew chief on C-141Bs back in 88-91. I worked grave shift and sleep thru the weekend reservist doing touch and goes all weekend. The A4's were constantly buzzing around too. Whenever I'm at East Coast Supercharging in Cream ridge I see the C-17's going around. They seem much quieter?
Sat was muffled vehicles when we ran the Corvette Challenge there for years. There was a noise allowance of something like 95db @ 50' revving the car. Sunday was anything goes on sound.

My last house was a few miles from the airport and National Guard F16 jets would take off. Sure, it could be noisy once in a while but we built after the airport was built so no blame. Same as a racetrack. I didn't sign up for your revving a car so probably not going to like it after hours.

What brand muffler eliminator did you use? Is remainder of exhaust system intact & stock?
