If budget is an issue, that’s normal.
For what my opinion is worth, try to find a direct replacement for each and be done.
There a a number of ways to go about it, but I’d suggest a good reputable exchange on the engine. If you’re not comfortable with that or if you prefer to keep the drivetrain original to the car, find a local rebuilder to freshen it the engine. You’ll save a good bit of money pulling the engine yourself.
As for the transmission, I don’t know if it’s manual or automatic, but if it’s automatic, again, you’ll save money pulling it out yourself. But sometimes the warranty on them can be worth having them do it.
I hope this helps. Best of luck on the project.

Default Where to look...

Is there a particular place to look for a reasonably priced combo?

I’m not sure how far you are from Reno/Sparks, but you can probably get a good engine/trans combo at Summit. But remember, DO YOUR RESEARCH WITH DILLIGENCE.
Get an engine with specs close to the OEM so the ECM can figure it out. Speak with the engine company directly to discuss your needs and concerns.
You can pm me if you want, or we can keep it going here.

How’s the research going?
I’m not sure if you know a lot about Vettes, but in your engine search be sure to look for a couple things.
1) Make sure your new engine has NON-Vortec heads. And the heads your engine has should be for the proper bolt pattern of your intakes base. That, thankfully, should be pretty easy.
2) You’ll also want an engine with a 1-piece rear main seal. It’ll match up to your stock transmission with a bunch of mix-n-match parts.

as for the transmission, you’re probably going to have to drag the guy thru court for satisfaction. But that may be throwing good money after bad.
anyway, to stay stock, there may be an exchange you can do over at Summit. I believe they carry stock replacement/service parts as well as performance stuff.
I hope this helps.
