1985 C4 Speaker size
EDIT: I should probably add that there is an aftermarket single space head unit in it now, with a filler plate and the 4 speakers are in their original Bose enclosures. Myabe something along the lines of this for a head unit:

I can't comment on the head unit -my HU of choice is a '90's vintage Alpine 7534s. Awesome but won't do a damn thing that the HU's that you're considering will do.
All that I would say about the HU is to buy the one that has the interface that suits you best and has all the features that you want. Otherwise, I don't think it matters much from a sound quality stand point. For the rest, buy high powered good quality amps....you can't have too much power (you can, but that is manageable) and having too little power sucks.
Go and listen to speakers. No they won't sound exactly the same in the store, as they will in your car but they have a "Character" that is totally identifiable in the store, whether it be "bright" or "heavy" or "muted" or whatever....so get a speaker that has the characteristics that you favor, then you can tune it into your car with amp/bass/treble controls. Finally, I would totally focus on a high quality, high powered speaker for the front. Separates. The front of the C4 is tough due to speaker size and location so I would try to overcome that with quality, power, and the most size I could fit into any location and having separate tweeters. Hope that helps.
