Will DANA 36 3.73 gears fit in a 2.73 carrier? Better yet, what is it that guides which gears will work in which carrier?
When I put a ZF6 in my 87 coupe 383 I had my 3.07 rear tore apart and didn't know how to put it back together properly so, I
just bought a 2.73 rear already assembled and put it in. But the 2,73 doesn't feel strong at all so, I read up on how to do it
and I put the 3.07 back together and it feels much better than the 2.73. But I think that probably the best feel with that ZF6 would
be the 3.73 gears. Am I right? So I want to put new 3.73s in the 2.73 housing that I just took out.
If the 3.07 D36 build is 'sound' and the car is 'drivable' I believe I'd advertise your D36 for sale. Being 'drivable' you can confirm for a buyer 'it's quiet' (if it is) and if they wanted to check anything then do the buy. The 2.73 judging from your post is also good - sell both and move on to a D44 for the ZF6. A 3.73 D36 and a ZF doesn't sound like a 'solid plan'. Gears, kit and the build $$$ I'd think get you well on the way to a D44. Drive what you've got until you find a D44.
If you've any doubts about the condition of your D36's then that changes everything.
If building the 2.73 @James93LT1 is correct, you'll need a 'thick' gear.
