Default Oil leak

Driving today and smoke started pouring out. Drove back home, not to far. Oil was pouring out as I parked. Dripping under the driver's side. Headgasket?

No, probably not. Valve cover gasket or manifold gasket. Clean up and run and you will see where it is coming from. Dan

I would look at the oil filter mount, if it's coming out under pressure not valve covers. Now I have seen the gasket under the oil filter mount split, and if you have the HD cooler option I have seen the big bolt/Filter mount loosen and cause out to flow from block

Looking at it....oil came out around the filter and went into the exhaust. Possibly adapter?

How does oil get into the exhaust? It could be the cooler gasket which is between the cooler and the block or the oil filter gasket which is between the oil cooler and the oil filter.

Air turbulence gets the oil everywhere, even higher than the oil cooler . I have had the same problem with the oil cooler seal leaking,
It gets on the exhaust and everywhere.
Pressure spray wash the area clean, go for a short drive and look under the car.

The correct oil cooler seal is available, do not use an old oil filter seal as its slightly too small.
Having said that you can make it work, but need trail and error to get it right with an oil filter seal.
that is just because I am.in OZ a two week shipping wait makes you try these silly things.

Hey it may just be the oil cooler is loose, if the filter had been overtightened it can undo the tube bolt a bit before the filter releases.

So check that as well, remember the seal will be very old now and squashed. So may just need to tighten the tube bolt when oil filter is removed.

Cheers
Gerard

Isn’t the Oil Temperature Sensor unit right there above the oil filter?

I know we are all speculating. But there are a lot of oil sources in that area more likely than the head gasket.

Just wanted to be sure he meant ONTO as opposed to INTO. But you're right. The old seals could be leaking.

If it is an L98 the oil pressure sender and fuel sensor are right behind the distributor , they are under high pressure and known to spurt oil.
And it was burning right off the exhaust on mine.

Fuel sensor? I think one is oil pressure and the other is the oil pressure switch. IIRC.

Yes the oil pressure switch lets the computer know there is pressure.
Here is the pic of the 2 if you have them

Yes. Oil Pressure is measured behind the intake. Not sure what the “fuel sensor” is. The fuel lines run under the engine on the passenger side then up in front to the rail. The regulator is in front of the distributor.

There are two oil “pressure” related sensors on top of the engine. However, my 1991 L98 also has an Engine Oil “Temperature” sensor located above the oil filter housing. The sensor feeds the instrument panel and, I believe, has no connections to the ECM.

I don’t know if the 80’s models L98s have that sensor. If so, could be his oil leak source.

Edit: After pondering the “fuel sensor” you mentioned, I am sure you were referring to the Oil Pressure Switch that is part of the Fuel Pump circuit. Okay. Got it. The terminology confused my simpleton brain.
