Check the 5 volt reference voltage to see if it's making it to the TPS. Also is the ground wire grounded properly. If you have 5 volt, and the ground is good , then it's out of adjustment, or a bad tps, or a bad signal wire to the ECM. A scan tool will make life a lot easier so you can monitor voltage without disconnecting anything.

I found that my connector to the TPS had become loose (probably because I knocked it a bit loose before) but now when I start the engine the "Service Engine Light" flashes, next step? By the way, year 89, thanks.

If you don't have a scan tool , I would disconnect the battery for a minute to clear the code. Your radio sets may be off, but it's probably that stored code, Unless there's another code or there's still a TPS issue. Autozone or Pep boys might have a scan tool to use for free.
