I’ve got several broken screws around the fuel sending unit that I’d like to remove. I’ve heard you can grab the bolts from the underside but mine seem to be covered with some sort of plastic bracket that doesn’t leave the bolts exposed. Is this something that another owner Jerry rigged?

I have 1 broken screw.
No good way to grab it from the inside on mine so I tried to get it out with a screw extractor, which then broke inside the screw.
Gave up on it and bought a new tank for $171.
I'm redoing the entire fuel system, so the rear subframe is out anyway.
I broke off a couple of the bolts on my 1988 C4. I used a hot air gun and heated the remaining parts and then soaked them with penetrating oil, after a couple rounds of doing this they came right out easily. I replaced bolts with Grade 8 hardware and anti-seize on the bolts.
You need to get the broken bolts out or you might have a gas leak on the top of your fuel tank. No silicone on these gaskets since they are exposed to gasoline, use an older style gasket maker/sealer.
No sealant on the inside of my tank or on the bolts. I did the job with my tank drained and cleaned to reduce the fire risk.
