I have a black 1991 C4 6 speed convertible. I am looking to replace the exhaust for better perfromance and sound. The only mod I have so far is a K&N air filter. Any suggestions on what type of exhaust system to go with? What about true dual instead of cat-back? Thanks.
My suggestion would be getting the following: 2.5" diameter front y-pipe w/out precats, a high flow cat (or get rid of the cat if emissions is not a concern), a 2.5" diameter rear y-pipe, and top it off with a pair of the performance mufflers of your choice. Most of the performance mufflers are pretty equall in performance so you just need to pick the ones that have the sound you want. This combo will give you a pretty nice gain in performance.
What kind of sound are you looking for? I could tell you that my Walker Y pipe combined with Dynomax UFSS mufflers have a deep low tone to them. It is louder but still deep low with the addition of headders and a hi-flo cat. Others could chime in on their sound characteristics if sound is as improtant to you as it was to me when I was looking.
Since you stated "replace", I recommend
-2 1/2" SS front Y, no pre-cats
-Random Tech cat
-hi flow cat-back (I like my TPIS cat-back, it has some resonance; check my site for performance gains with this setup).
To maximize the gains I suggest you also cut the air filter lid to let more air into the motor.
You may also need to install an AFPR to realize the max gain.
