Default Weird AC Function

Maybe I'm just not smart enough to operate the "High tech" electronic HVAC system in my 94 Corvette. So all of the buttons work correctly. I can switch between vent, bi-level, floor, and defrost just fine and I can get heat control so the blend door is working. I have just replaced the blend door actuator because the original one split a gear and was not working but it seems to be working just fine. So now the strange part. When I try to use the AC the only settings that will turn on the compressor are Auto, Recirc, and the bi-level. Any of those settings will produce cold air but coming out of multiple vents. Usually floor, dash, and defrost. I want the cold air to only come out of the dash vents but when I push that button the air switches to the dash vents only but the compressor turns off even with the requested temp being set at 60 and the fan set to high. So is there something wrong with the car or is it supposed to work that way? I can believe that AC always has to blow out of the defrost vent?

94 owners manual is online from GM: https://my.gm.com/content/dam/gmowne...tte_owners.pdf
P. 109-110, your AC works as intended. The system has probably been designed with the assumption people would keep it in the 'auto' mode always.

Thanks for the reply and for the link. I did not have that link and the manual for my car is long gone. I'm kind of saving one with the 94. It has a lot of problems that I'm working through so it's hard to tell what is broken, almost working, and working sometimes.
