Default 1984 steering rack

Hi, the steering rack failed in my ‘84 car, it’s a Z51. While trying to buy a new rack I learned about the “fast” and “slow” racks but am not sure which mine has. Can someone let me know how I find this out? Thanks

If you have a z51 it should have the "fast" ratio. You can count turns lock to lock if it hasn't completely failed. I don't remember off the top of my head how many it is for one or the other but someone else probably does.

If you send it to Turn One they can rebuild it better than new with your steering ratio of choice. They do awesome work fairly quickly even in this time of Covid. I had them rebuild the rack that came off the Corvette and I got the same one back a few weeks later. Not that I am a purist or anything but I would rather have my part rebuilt versus replaced with somebody's failed rack.

The way to keep your Rack and Pinion in good shape is to keep the fluid cooler. I added a larger reservoir to help keep the fluid cooler. I have a Tube and Fin cooler I was going to do if it gets hot in the summer. The cooler they run the longer they last as it is primarily the seals that wear out due to heat. Good Luck!

Can you confirm that? I don't think that is the case. TO change the ratio, they'd have to give you a new rack and a new pinion gear....and I don't believe that they service or replace those parts. My understanding is that their service is seal/boots/bushings, and that's about it?
