Default 1985 Seat Help

Hello Everyone!

I have owned my C4 for a few years, dad owned it before me and gifted it to me. Needs mostly cosmetics, but recently (within last 3 weeks) wouldn't turn on. This past weekend it turned on for about 3 seconds and died. Most likely a fuel issue...there could be a chance of an air issue if a rodent nested up there...but I doubt it. I am at a course right now and I wont be able to really dig into it for another few weeks.

Topic on hand though,
I have power seats, I only remember it moving forward. Basically until your knees were literally in the dash. However, even that has not worked in a year or two. I found a video the other day one how to remove the seat without power. I removed the cushion and I do not even know what I am looking at. Does this thing have electric and ...vacuum powered seats?? Has anyone repaired these original seats? Or do you just recommend replacing them?

You have a sport seat option. The Electric plugs control the seat back tilt, bolsters and air bladder for lumbar support.

. Now how to move seat back without power take the seat tub off track unit, carefully remove the retainer for the 3 cables from motor side. Once you have access the cables you can turn the cables by hand and slide seat back. ( if I remember right the middle tube is the seat slide)

You're front to back motion (as will as rise and lower) are controlled by the switch in the center console and run by the gear in your seat track. The front and back should use the same motor so if it goes forward but not backward I would first suspect the switch is bad in the center console. You can test the motor by putting 12v to it with a power probe to confirm but I don't recall off hand which pin in the connector is for which function so some research there or experimenting would be necessary.

Now if it's moving forward but wont move backwards and you hear the motor working and a popping noise is coming from the seat the seat rack transmission has gone bad. These can be rebuilt so no worries there, it's just a little expensive though. I'm leaning towards a bad switch though if you don't hear to motor engage at all when trying to go backwards.

Follow 85WhiteZ51 advice. You can remove the 4 bolts in the seat bottom pan that are in the corners (If I remember correctly 10mm) and the entire seat can be removed leaving the seat adjusting rack exposed. Then you can remove the four nuts in the corners of that frame if you need to have it rebuilt.
