My '85 stumbled and died yesterday. It set a code 34. I read the archives, and changed the MAF relay. It will start still, but then stumbles and dies after about five seconds.
First question - I've read alot about there being two relays behind the battery, but I can only find one, are 85s different?
Second - if it's not the relay, and the MAF sensor is bad, wouldn't it still run, just in limp home mode? Because it will not run.
Lastly, anything else I should be looking into?
lite blue, if you have access to a manual, there are 5 steps for checking voltage to the MAF. Step 6 suggests that if sensor and circuits are functional, the PCM may be faulty. The manual also suggests that a common problem is MAF sensor wire damage.
Lite blue have you tried cleaning the throttle body? Then it says to check wiring and connections especially at the ECM, then relay, then MAF sensor and last possibile ECM failure. Good luck 84 CF 91 ZR-1
See if it will run with the MAF unplugged. It should get you around but will be grouchy when cold (so floor it) and it will run a litttle rich. What I mean by "so floor it" is when it pops and backfires it's going Lean I think (haven't verified this yet though) but flooring it brings it out and will get you going until it warms up......... then it'll run fine as long as there is temp in the engine....... I don't understand all this YET but I know it works as I'm driving mine that way NOW
