Hi,
I have an 86 C4 Convertible.
Can anyone tell me if I need the EGR crossover pipe on the passenger side of the engine? Can it be taken out and capped? Mine keeps falling off the exhaust side
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Jim

Reason: Adding something
The pipe is supposed to be held on the ex manifold with a one time use crimp clamp.
u need to find one the size if the tube and crimp the clamp so it stays on.
there are special crimpers for those clamps

I have that, I just can't get down in there to crimp it on. Plus it is kind of out of shape a bit. Do you need that? Doesn't it come of with the smog pump, or if you add a set of headers? Just wondering. It broke off while I was driving it, no code came up, it ran okay, just noise from the exhaust.
Thanks,
Jim
Since the intake manifold does not have a hole in it that lines up with the hole in the iron heads, they use an external pipe.
what it is supposed to do is partially fill the cylinder with an inert gas (exhaust) that will compress, but not burn, thus dropping tail pipe emissions.
another benefit is that it helps your engine resist pinging.
if you want to eliminate it, you can remove the exhaust manifold, saw off the short pipe and have your muffler shop weld up the hole.
then make a blank off for the manifold hole.
the problem happens when the little sensor that’s screwed into that pipe does not get hot. The computer will sense that there’s something wrong with the egr, and turn on the service engine soon light and throw a code.
i saw a corvette that the owner welded up the ex. manifold hole, then drilled and tapped it and screwed the sensor into the hole.
the computer will see that it’s hot.
I didn’t ask the guy if it worked ok, but since it looked like it had been there a while, i thought it did.
