this is my L98 small block, sounds alright i guess for a backyard home made crank job and refurbished engine
... well after an hour or so of trying to figure out how to upload mp4 file.. i give up so, sorry... but it sounds pretty good.. im happy with it right now
i'll get some here. just nicely getting it back together and running. the video there was the second start up, i still have to set the air fuel ratio and all that stuff. it has been a long hard road where everything i have done has fought with me.
i got the pulley system completely rigged up in a way most people will say wtf.. but it turned out pretty good in my opinion. had to use a c 5 power steering pump for the clockwise rotation because of the electric water pump. all i am running is power steering and alternator using a super small ribbed belt all going to the drivers side. entire passenger side is open. once i get it cleaned up with the fan controller and water pump controller and completely done i will add some engine. and yes. used all the dash gauges all are working it has 70 psi of oil with 10-30. i have no intentions of racing the car or taking it to a track. it is just a 91 convertible that i want to cruise around in for a summer toy.
i dont want to garbage up the interior with after market gauges and big nasty tach's n stuff. i want to buy one of those a pillar pods for the afr gauge and that's it. it has a nice interior still, all black leather. the dash board has no cracks or nothing. it even has the original bose stereo system that i would like to restore. or at least replace the speakers since 1 is not working. it's a nice car really with only 120 k on the speedo. it wa s show car that caught on fire from leaky fuel injectors and the guy couldn't stand to see it in his garage cause it made him sick to look at, so he sold it to me for 500 bucks. and yes vin matched the title LOL first thing i checked
here is a picture of the pulley set up DWAvette. thats a C5 power steering pump and pulley. had to buy a new pulley to match the c5 pump because it is clockwise rotation instead of counter clockwise. counter clockwise has no grooves in the pulley. clockwise does. that belt fit in there just perfect. hitting on top and bottom just enough to make it work. i had to relocate the power steering reservoir a little for belt clearance but used the same hoses and everything. also had to modify the bracket to make it fit. took me about half a day and 4 trips to the hardware store.. but it held up to a 4500 free rev with a couple quick taps on the gas pedal and didn't throw the belt so i'm saying it turned out great. . just taking a little break from the 90 degree heat outside and thought i would show a pic. amazon should be here any time with my electric water pump controller and i can get more done. then change the water out to antifreeze after i am happy with everything. then finish it up. change the oil out to lucas break in 20-50 with a wix racing filter. adjust the roller rockers one more time then button it up. wish it wasn't so damn hot out there
someone laughed and said aint no way that belt will ride like that... well it does and it seems to be working great
. this is not what it will look like at all . i am using them nasty old plug wires because i dont want to get oil all over my new moroso blue wires and and using the old distributor cap for now., i can perty it up later. i just want to drive this thing again.. upper radiator hose is just cut to fit with what i had. all that stuff will be changed to look good eventually. you dont see how dirty stuff looks until you see it in a pic like this. i power washed that thing about 4 times when the engine was out and it is still all grimy looking. control arms look dirty and everything to me. my VHT silver paint on the black primer hooker headers was a big fail also... nothing like the rusty header look on a new engine.. "sigh" guess i will send them to jet coat when i get around to buiuding the 400 small block . and no it was not running to lean. i just didnt do the VHT "break in" properly cause i was drinking and playing with rockers to loosen em up to get lifters to pump up.. nightmare pos car has F'd with me every step of the way. but i am getting it
got plenty of fresh clean air, cruising around on a cool summer night for the 750 CFM holley ultra DP, that's for sure..
can i get a sneaky pete,... ova hera
did i read that you paid 500 beans for this? wow, that's a nice looking engine and the car looks good. heck in my lookings i've seen stuff for $2000 and a lot of time there's no engine or anything....and most likely they are pretty ratty looking.
it's also funny , i read some article a little while ago about someone modding the L98 engine and they took off the TPI and just had a carburetor , and the HP of the engine was over 320 hp or something to that effect....it was interesting to see. wish i could find it again!
A C4 6p vert with a carbd setup...would love it! Ca you cant modify anything except your anatomy.
LOL HAHAHAHA that just made me laugh hard, thank you. and soooo true i wonder if all those face injection and implants they do in CA are C.A.R.B approved ROFL
thank you sahas. that was the second start up is all. i'm sure it will get a little more cammy sounding once the carb and timing is all set dead on. i sorta wimped out on it for a few days here since it has been 90 with heat index pushing 100 every day for a week or 2 now. hopefully this weekend i can go spend an all nighter and not worry about getting up for work at 6 am and get this done finally. i am getting excited to drive it. car has been tore apart wayyyy too long. covid crap held me up on buying parts everything that could fight with me, fought with me.. i know one thing. them tires will be severely abused once i get in it and start driving..
ohh and yes, you read that correct 500 beans.. but that was a whole lot of parts ago lol. it's up to around 7500 now.
2000 for headers and exhaust.
1500 ish into Dart heads with Dart stud girdles and lunati roller rockers
1000 for cam, timing chain, lifters and pushrods
200 for electric water pump.
150 for c5 power steering pump and pulley
200 for innovative air fuel ratio gauge
80 for a pillar pods for gauges
1000 for new flywheel clutch and pressure plate, master and slave cylinders
500 for holley 750 ultra double pumper
250 for performer rpm air gap intake
250 for rod, main and cam bearing with new rings.
endless misc BS things.
and that is doing 100% of the labor myself right down to sitting in the backyard hand polishing my crank out on the table, installing my own cam bearings, honing cylinders everything
oh and about 500 buck in budweiser and 250 for chicken for the BBQ lol
some pics on how i fixed the crank up
not totally wrecked but not great. needed some work for sure. i think it was mostly old bearing stuck to the crank instead of gouged into the crank. it was a decent running engine when i pulled it out.
this took about a whole weekend. wax on wax off, my arms were about to fall off when i was done.
finally called it good enough. i will know when i hold it down to 6500 rpm if it was good enough. i have 70 psi oil pressure cold idle though
