I replaced the brake booster on my 87 with the all metal one. Pedal isn't as hard and goes down farther to the floor than the stock one I replaced that was cracked. Didn't mess with the master with this install.
Is there an adjustment with the nut that engages the master?

Yes. There should be an adjustment nut on the tip of the rod. I had to adjust mine several times before I got it right when I replaced mine in my 84.
Mine did as well. Think it's a quarter inch bolt on the one I used. I also made the actual adjustment tool (it exists). Looks like this and I just made it with a square and some tough cardboard with a wooden skewer through the ribs of the cardboard. Worked great and saved me a lot of unbolting of the MC. Two tries and it was good.
