Default Knock Sensor

Hi all,
I've got a 92 LT1 and the Service Engine Soon light comes on from times to times, so I did a diagnose and according to it I have to replace the Knock Sensor (code 43)
I'm french (and I live in France) and I can't find what this sensor is made for and whether it is urgent to replace it...
So if anybody knows anything regarding this matter I would be really pleased of his help as I feel quite alone in France because it is difficult to have any support if you have a Corvette...
Thanks

First, welcom to the forum.
Your car has 2 knock sensors one on each side of the engine: about mid span near the motor mounts. They are covered by piece of sheet metal painted black. The covering is held on by 2 10mm bolts.
The sensors monitor engine detonation and the ECM will retard spark timing according to the number of knocks sensed. Hope this helps. :seeya

I had the same problem, but replacing the sensors didn't help. It turned out that I needed to replace the computer!

Just wanted make sure that you knew the Kock sensors go into the coolant passage so make sure that you drain the system of you will get an unexpected and unwelcome shower!!!

Thank you for the info...
But my other question now is : Can I use the car in this condition, til it's fixed ? May the car be harmed if I drive it with this failure ?
Thany you all and happy holidays !!

It shouldn't harm anything. You should only experience reduced performance.

:iagree:

Everything stated above is right on the mark...including it may be the ECM.

The GM part number for a 1992 LT-1 knock sensor is 10456126. Cost $30.64 US.

Yes, but the knock sensors replace block coolant drain plugs. These plugs are the lowest opening/drain in the system. It is impossible to fully drain the system without removing the plugs and/or sensores. The otherwise draining of the system will reduce the volume of the "shower" but it won't eliminate it. Either way, be prepaired for the release of coolant. Good luck, and...

Everyone is right, pulling the knock sensor will drain the antifreeze. But if you have a drain pan underneath it and quickly remove the old one and get the new one started, you can change it with minimal loss of antifreeze, not having to completely drain and refill the whole system. Do this with the engine cold.
