I have never worked with an LT1 and in fact the newest engine I have ever built is the one in my 84. So I know nothing about them. A friend of mine is getting an LT1 or LT4 (not sure) From a cop car. Any one know anything about these? I don't have a part number yet. I think he is getting it in a week or so. He wants to rebuild it and make a wicked street engine out of it. Any differences between the regualr LT1 and the cop car version? Or did they use a LT4 in the cop cars?
Thanks for any info.
From a cop car it will be an LT-1. It will also be the iron head version, the same that was used in the Impala SS. The iron heads can be made to flow better that the aluminum heads but weigh more.
Hmmm. Having driven "cop cars" for a living, I might note that next to taxi's they are the most abused vehicles on the street. Ours were never turned off, or serviced unless they completely stopped running. Having said that, if he's starting with just the block and figuring to rebuild the entire engine - it's a Chevy and should run just fine. I just wouldn't leave any of the components in the mill for the rebuild as they are most likely toast.
Be very carfull they do not slip you a 265ci version, from my understanding they look the same. I believe they call it a L99. If i'm not mistaken the correct casting number for a LT1 should be 327 found on either side of the engine block.
Yeah, I hope your friend realizes that not all LT1's are the same. The Caprice versions are not the same. 2 bolt block, iron heads, smaller cam, lower injector #'s etc.
Thanks for all the replys. Him and I are going to go rip this thing out of the cop car in a few days. He is also getting tranny and harness. He will be rebuilding the engine with a comp cams cam and have the heads ported. Did they use any other size than 350 ci in the cop cars? I didn't figure we would have to worry about it since we are the ones ripping it out.
Well thanks for all the help.
...Did they use any other size than 350 ci in the cop cars? ....
They did, some urban cop forces went with the baby LT1, the L99. The easy way to tell is the LT1s have a true dual exhaust system, the L99s have a single pipe system.
If the LT1 is out of a 9C1 Caprice police car, Buick Roadmaster, standard Caprice with the 5.7 LT1 option, or Impala SS it has an iron head 2 bolt LT1 block. However if the motor is out of a B4C or Z28 Camaro the motor uses the same 2 bolt block block as the Caprice/Impala SS but the same aluminum heads as the Corvette motor. The Corvette motor is the same as the Camaro motor except for a factory 4 bolt main block. Camshafts may vary slightly from year to year as well.
Police motors ofthen included oil coolers and heavy duty alternators that were not standard. The regular Caprice that might have been used for police might have had a 4.3L but it would not have a 9C1 option code.
Also a 2 bolt LT1 block is considered by some to be a better starting place for a high horsepower build as you can add 4 bolt splayed main caps and not be weakened by the standard 4 bolt caps.
Many folks think the cop car motor is special. It is not. In reality, it simply means it's been beat to death. A Buick or other rear wheel drive full-size GM car of the same vintage will have the exact same motor without all the abuse. Go looking for station wagons and Roadmasters. ;)

I can't tell you the number of times a Caprice owner has told me his car has a "cop motor", too bad they didn't put them in Impalas. I try to tell them the same iron headed LT1 is in all 94-96 Impalas, Caprice, Roadmasters and Fleetwoods, but they never believe it. Kind of like the guys who claim their stock 69 302 Z28 Camaro was a low 12s car, stock.
We know that this engine will be beat. I just found out that it has 100,000 miles on it. It will have to be rebuilt. Thats not a problem. The reason he wants this one is because it's free. I thought he was buying it but found out that it's free. Anyway he is looking for a good LT1 street engine for in an older F-body. He normaly won't use aluminum heads. Thats why he liked this one. As far as the head thing I disagree but to each there own.
Thanks for all the posts and clearing all this up. He said that on the back side of the block is stamped 5.7L and it has the duel exhaust so we know what it is. I told him to look for the 327 on the side. He hopes to be able to reuse the block, heads, and intake thats it. Everything else will be new.
