Default dana 44 gear install

Question for those who've dove into a dana 44. I'm in the process of installing 4:10s in one of my zr1s and found an interesting scenario. The stock pinion had zero shims under the bearing.... I've done a bunch of rearends before but this is my first dana 44, I've never seen a rear not have shims under the pinion. Rear was stock, unopened and made zero noise. Is this common?

That is odd I believe. Pattern is what you'd expect for the miles? Is your new gear set a 'crush sleeve', a collar or you're expected to do shims. What's the information on the ring gear that you removed? Is the 4.10 a 216mm ring gear or a 226mm ring gear?

It is odd, the wear pattern is perfect. New gear set is a mopar unit with the crush sleeve.

It's important to know 216mm or 226mm before you start! Part # of the MoPar Set?

That I believe is a 216mm gear set with the 3/8 ring gear bolts. It costs nothing to 'measure' and confirm. If perhaps it's 226mm it will still work but there will be massaging required.

Maybe they're under the race instead of behind the bearing? Sometimes that's done to keep the shims from sqeezing out under high loads.

Certainly interesting.... I've never seen one like that and have taken apart/setup a bunch. Things happen with tolerance stack and obviously they got a pinion with a high shoulder and a housing with a shallow rear bearing race pocket that managed to just work out....
