Default [Radar Detector] How to hardwire into a C4?

I figured I'd ask about this before shelling out the money for a radar detector...

I've read many people have hardwired their radar detector's into the wiring for the rear-view mirror lights, but what about a C4 that has no rear-view light? I'd like to mount it under the mirror, but don't want the annoying cord hanging down. Is it possible to wire it somehow to the fuse box? Or am I the only C4 with no rear-view mirror light?

On my V1 I concealed the wire in the upper windshield area and ran it down to the fuse block on the passnger side and tied it in with a wire that was switched on with the key.

:iagree:
I got some fuse taps at radio shack for all of $1 and tapped into the windsheild wiper fuse.

No rear view mirror light???? I thought they all had them. huh. Mine is tapped into the rear view mirror light, but you can also just run a wire down to the fuse block like suggested.

Thanks for the help. I think I'm gonna run the wire along the windshield and connect to the wiper fuse with a fuse-tap. The fuse box cover probably won't fit anymore, oh well.

I spliced into the wires for the vanity mirror on the sunvisor which only comes on when the ignition switch is on. :)

My C4 has two lights in the RVM, one on the dimmer and the other not; the one not dimmed is the one to use.

Tap into the visor vanity light is a good idea also.

There should be a hole in the header near the RVM mount. You can run the wire through there and down to your switched source. Radio Shack has insulation displacement connectors for easy splicking. You just insert a but connector from the radar detector's power lead and clamp the displacement connector onto the power carrying wire.

I have a Cobra mounted to the windshield with suckers, just to the left of the RVM (You could also use velcro to mount it under the header). In that location it's almost impossible to spot it and you can easily reach up and unplug it if in "one of those states".

I too thought all C4s had a lighted RVM; so before you start the project, remove the RVM and drop the header a little to see if there is a wire up there but just not connected to the RVM. If so find out which wire is not on the dimmer and use it.

I ran the wire( for an 8500 Escort) under the winshield surround trim, carefully wedged it around the instrument cluster trim down to the center console, and connected it to the existing accessory harness tap that is provided by
the factory. On a previous C4 I ran the wire in the other direction
down the passanger side A- piller and reach the fuse box and used a
fuze tap. To me the first way "looked" more professional but either will
work. Not having the power cord hanging down has many benifits like
not being able to know the car has a detector from the outside.
Good Luck! :steering:

Can’t see it being different on a vert.
I have mine spliced into map light in rear view mirror. I made a mount that uses the rear view mirror screw and sits just under rear view mirror.

I added a V1 and camera USB by running the wires down the A pillar to the glove box. Then installed a dual power outlet. I used one for the cigarette litter adaptor for the V1 and then swapped out the other for a multi USB plug.

the dual power port is powered by a piggy back mini fuse, I think I used the wiper circuit power feed, don’t drive it in inclement weather.

Works great and is tidy.

The PO jumped a radar detector to the pass side sun visor vanity mirror light.

While I was at it, I replaced the console cigarette lighter with a triple USB that has an on - off switch to mini me the chance of a power drain when sitting unused.

Are radar detectors even useful these days?

Anyway, as an aside, I found this interesting regarding the C4 design and police radar...

I've also noticed that on those speed limit signs that detect and digitally display your speed that they rarely detect the speed of my C4.

Once in a great while, they might display my speed if I'm really close to it but usually nly when there is nobody driving behind me.

Otherwise it detects the speed of whomever is driving behind me rather than detecting my speed.
