Hi, my mechanic told me today I need an ABS pump, he said either a new one or refurbished one, but not to get a used one because apparently their failure was an issue with the C4s. I have a 1986 Corvette. Where can I get a new or refurbished one? Thank you for any assistance! I appreciate it! Wanting to get her back on the road!
Hi, Viking, yes, he did, but I didn't understand it all although I trust him thoroughly, he's been a mechanic for 38 years, and sometimes that doesn't really even matter because I took my car to two other different mechanics prior to him last year when I had a stalling issue. This mechanic I'm with now solved my problem in a short manner, it was just loose connections in my computer and it only cost me $250 to have the computer repaired, and the other two mechanics combined cost me over $1,300 and never even fixed the problem! I trust his judgment, and he said if I could find an ABS pump, that he would be able to swap it out in my car.
I removed my 1986 ABS system and sold the complete pump quickly on EBAY for $350, there were a few others for around $400… get one with a warranty (I didn’t provide a warranty but some people do especially if they have access to several)
Thank you for your reply and info. I think if my mechanic felt that he could rebuild/ refurbish it himself, I'm sure he would because he did this with my starter and also the brake booster. I am leery of eBay, but I guess if there was a warranty on the pump that would make me feel more comfortable in buying off of eBay.
I'm obviously not a mechanic, but he did mention how the valve sticks and that's why the brake doesn't release, so my first thought was, why don't you clean the valve? I don't know, but I'm sure he does because he's actually looked at the pump... and I know he knows how to repair something that some mechanics don't know how to do.
I did look at the Mirrock website and they do have a 1986 ABS pump, but it is used and not refurbished. I may have to go this route, but I prefer not to if it all possible. Another idea is to find a company that can refurbish my own 1986 ABS pump. Does anyone know of any company out there that does this and is reputable? Or my mechanic could repair it if anybody knows where we can find a 1986 abs pump repair kit. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

search the site for abs cleaning. Some guy took his all apart. At the end of the post is a link to a company that rebuilds them. If I remember our systems were like $800.00. They have amazing before and after pictures on their website. Dan

This is an interesting read - maybe for your mechanic also:
*** I have one removed from an '89 that was wrecked and dismantled shortly there after. It was in a shop all the while. I bought several pieces from the car at the time and this came with the 'package' - I'd sell reasonable I'm sure but I'm in no position to offer warranty or confirm it's working.
No one refurbishes these or sells new ones. Used is all you can get. A mechanic isn't going to disassemble the pump and try to fix it. It's not worth his/her time or the liability if it fails.
WVZR-1, that was an awesome link to the thread with pictures showing how to disassemble and clean the ABS pump! I will definitely send that to my mechanic tomorrow, because he had said if he had a repair kit he could do it himself, now that we have a guideline on how to clean it, I bet he can do that as well! I'll let you know what I find out!
Karen, I don't think rebuild kits are available. By the time you take apart the pump, clean the pump and track down each of what seems like 100 different o-rings you will be over the rebuild cost from the link I sent you. Yes, if you did all the work yourself and had all winter to measure and order each o-ring you would be cheaper. On top of that you have no way to actually test the pump before you install it. Just my thoughts. Good Luck,Dan
Thanks Dan for your thoughts. When I read through the thread about cleaning the ABS pump, a couple people thought that it looked pretty easy to do? I'll send it to my mechanic and let him decide.
Also, Ihatebarkingdogs, thanks for your input, as well. I did read somewhere about that too, just to bypass the ABS. I'll message my mechanic that info also.
Thanks again to you both, I really appreciate it! It would be great to have my car back for the weekend, no doubt!
