Default Head and Cam package recommendations

As you can see by my signature I am using every conceivable "bolt on". I am now ready for some real HP increase, a head and cam upgrade.

Which major tuner/supplier gives you the best "bang for the bucks", LPE, TPIS, CNC Cylinder Heads?

(I will be staying with the stock appearing TPI setup and will have the original stock D-ports reworked)

Thanks,

The stock intake is gonna limit the effectiveness of any major head/cam job you do.

If the money is there. You should really consider an aftermarket intake. They are the icing on the cake sorta speak. :yesnod:

I am very happy with my CNC 113 D-ports I got from 89vette who had them worked by CNC Heads in Fl.

I think you'd be happy with the LPE SR package coupled with AFR 190s. The TPIS miniram has more potential, but you have to build your car to take advantage of it.

IF...you really want to stay with the TPI and stock heads, i recoomend a good porter like CNC or LPE (if you can afford them). Then go with the ASM runners and a LPE 211 or TPIS ZZ9 cam.

Budget, within reason.

This car is my only hobby and only outlet for disposable income. I am looking for the head and cam package that will give me the best performance for the perameters that I have set for myself, namely a stock appearing (no SuperRam or Miniram) and streetable L98.

Don't get me wrong, I like to save money as much as the next guy and I am by no means independantly wealthy but this will probably be my last project (I have contracted an incidious disease called Multiple Sclerosis) and I want to do my last project right.

I don't want to leave my wife with a car she would have trouble selling or take a substantial discount tor not being "stock" (you know how selfrigtious those purist can be. Just kidding, Red or Yellow, Black or White they all are precious in our sight.

Thanks for your recommendations,

I agree, why re-invent the wheel...Tried and true, LPE 74211 cam, Accell/LPE base, ASM runners, and stock CNC ported heads. (Tell them what cam/intake setup you are going to use) Should be bulletproof, quick and very streetable.

If you want it to look stock, then go with what has been said. Accel/LPE 211 cam, CNC ported heads, AS&M runners, TPiS BigMouth or Accel Manifold, ported plenum.

I agree with the guys above. If you are going to stay with stock type intake, or close to it, just have your heads ported and go with a mild cam upgrade. It will give you a nice power boost. Problem is that in 6 - 8 months you'll probably want more...

You can expect about 25hp from pocket ported 113 castings with 2.00"/1.56" valves and RRs; about 30hp from a TPIS ZZ-9 or Super Profile cam.

Since you already have a modified TPI intake and headers, I would expect you to get over 350hp from the final result.

Then you should have a TransGo shift kit and 2,000rpm TC installed and have the shift points raised to around 6,000rpm. You can soften the part throttle shifts with the TV cable adjustment.

To assure that rpm range install 7/16" rocker studs, toss the oil sheders and add Ti retainers with 10deg locks when you have the heads done.

Your C4 will then be very streetable and yet a monster when you jump on it.

BTW, you might also do the cut-back spark plug ground electrode mod, change to a 160 deg stat & fan sw and install an underdrive crank with overdrive alt to add 20-30hp more. All these should get you into the mid 12s.

forum member Joe90 has the most hp/tq on the forum for a stock appearing TPI intake. In his sig is a link to his webpage which describes his engine.

I think he's using CNC 113 heads, aftermarket large runners and base, and a cam of around 225I duration. If I was gonna keep a stock appearing TPI, this is the setup I'd follow.

C44ever. Here is a link to a thread on Third Gen. Lots of good info on cams and induction for a Large runner TPI set up.
