I pulled the window regulator from the passenger door of my '84 resuscitation project. I have heard that I can go with a part from a newer model to gain some reliability. True? If so, any recommendations or advice?
You can convert to the later scissor style regulator. Or you can just replace the ribbon. I went with the ribbon because it lasted 35 years before it was a problem and I felt no need to spend that much money on it. I used dorman 74413 for about 20$ and cut to length to replace....
It however would seem that your issue is the motor as I don't see a break in the ribbon? If so i recall you have to drill a hole to use the later regulator but otherwise I believe it plugs in without too much modification.
You can either replace the ribbon, which you can get from Ecklers or MA or whatever, or upgrade to the later scissors style. You do have to drill a hole, did on my 86E when I broke the ribbon. But i agree i don't see a snap in your ribbon?
The original ribbon on my 86 lasted many years. The replacement ribbons did not last long. I replaced it twice in less than five years. The later style was a direct bolt in for me, the holes were already there. If the holes are not there it is simple to drill them . Do a search, the instructions should be available. The new style ones go up and down much faster.

Driver's side works pretty well. My issue was binding on the passenger side, then I find the lower rail rusted the the point that it crumbles in my hand. This car sat outside uncovered for more than 20 years so rust has been an issue.
I'm not shy about drilling holes to fit a new one.

Thanks!
looking on my phone I couldn't really tell the extent of that damage. I agree, no reason to not get the newer style if full replacing.
