OK- I noticed that the PKE wasn't working all the time, and then it stopped working completely. SO, I bought another battery, and popped it in. AND-Nothing- you could rub it on the driver's side window glass and nothing would happen. Doors didn't unlock, hatch wouldn't open.
Then I went through the whole procedure of programming the PKE. Still nothing, the key fob wouldn't do anything.
I gave up and just started using the key all the time.
THEN ONE DAY ABOUT A MONTH AGO- I walked up to it (about 2 feet), and the door locks popped. I freaked- this was the first time it had done that in about a month- I pressed the button for the hatch and IT OPENED! I closed the hatch and drove home. I got out of the car and walked away from it- NOTHING. I walked up to it- nothing. I locked the doors and walked away, because it had stopped working again.
Over the last couple of days- It sensed the fob as I get into my girlfriend's car next to it. So, I get out of her car and leave my keys in her car to go lock it. It's a good thing I did- because it didn't lock itself. Today, I got out of it, and locked the doors, and it cycled the locks, and armed the alarm, but then 15 minutes later- wouldn't recognize the fob- so I had to use the key.
It's not uncommon for the transmitters to go bad (key fob). You can code a buddy's keyfob to your car as a test. If you know a fob works on one car, and it does not on yours, then, you know it's the system in the car itself. When I first bought my car, the dealer let me code a spare (new) transmitter to the car to test the system out prior to dropping $$$ on the new fob. The system was good and my old fob was d.o.a., so I bought the new one after our little test.
I have a '93 and it just became too much of the pain in the butt to deal with at gas stations, washing the car, etc. So, I haven't used it since. But, that's just my opinion. I think I've been better off!
Another thing that some other people may be able to shed some light on, is that when a fob is brought within range of the car, I seem to remember that one of the lights ("security" or other) may light up on the dash. Dunno for sure, but again, if you know someone that has a similar year model car, the troubleshooting becomes a little easier.
Also, the antennas are in the doors and just just below the rear vent shade behind the vertical piece of carpet. Troubleshooting the system (if determined to a car prob and not a fob prob) could involve isolating a bad antenna. You could disconnect them one at a time and see if you can find a common denominator. Good luck with it. :)
Is it the sensing feature and the buttons that don't work? If it is just the sensing part, then try shaking the FOB SOB. If that works then you need to clean the motion switch(see the tips section here)
I've shaken it, moved it close to the car, and backed away, and did it again, etc. It's really weird in that it will work just fine a couple of times- and then quit altogether. I suppose I could try to hook up with someone else with a fob and program it to that fob and see if it works, otherwise I could ask my dealer for a "loaner" and see if it works, I don't know if they would go for that though. I wonder though- with the weatherstripping on the driver's side window cracked and etc.- maybe the antenna got wet and caused it to do this? Hmm- what do you think?-J
