Hi guys, I'm new here, how's it going? What I am wondering is is there a general consensus that the stock L98 set-up has a weaker or lower power area under 1000 RPM? Mine pulls like a freight train from 1000-3900 RPM. When I got the car someone screwed with the idle and it was idling at 1100-1200 RPM, I have since corrected that, more enjoyable to drive at the higher idle but definetly pointless with gas prices today. Just wondering if anyone has tinkered with or experimented with this before?
Thank you in advance.
Hello and welcome! the L98 is all about that TORQUE its the greatest truck engine Chevrolet did not put in a truck! It is the force that gets Mass into motion and a modified L98 does pull like a big block 300HP and close to 450LBS are easily reached. Just got to get it to breath up to about 6,000RPMS. A modified 383 L98 with great heads and cam pull down 500 plus LBS of neck snapping Torque. I am totally biased lol... Midwestz51 has new C4 Freight Train, lol... would be a good name to call your car. God Luck and God Bless - Jarrod

I'm guessing THIS is what you should have posted in your OP. Everyone is ignoring this and focusing on the title of your thread VERSUS what your question SEEMS to be about?
I have tinkered with the idle quite a bit..as well as tip-in and other idle/off-idle characteristics BUT I've done so after installing a 383. That means I know the limiitations of what you can do without "formal tuning" plus what you CAN do -- despite those limitations.
The first guy to reply (Vader) used to have his own website upon which he suggests that some owners like advancing the timing a bit. Of course that advances it EVERYWHERE. Depending on the quality of gas you run, this may or may not be an acceptable idea for your situation. (You also didn't state if you're running a stick or automatic. If the later, usually the torqu convertor "takes care of things" on the low end. If it's a stick, you can also get more "zip by revving a hair more" before letting the clutch out.
Are you talking about trolling...or response (AKA "tip-in") as you "roll into" the power band? If there's a lag, you might have a tune-up issue that needs to be addressed: plugs, injectors, or even IAC operation. Before you "tinker", make sure those work correctly AND you clarify what you're after.
Thank you for all the pointers and tips guys, and that name just might stick!
Tip-in or roll-in is beautiful at and above 1000 RPM, but it is only about 60% there from 700-1000 RPM. I'm guessing it's just how it is. The real benefit of it being that way is that you can feather the clutch from a complete stop and she'll bog down to about 500 RPM with no throttle. What I am trying to say is that you don't have to ride the clutch to get it going from a complete stop, I can't stand when people put this undue wear on their clutch. I'm fine with the way it is, just have to get used to getting on it before I dump it when I want too. The real reason I started this thread was that I'd like to get input from you guys on the LPE 74211 cam? If anyone has experience with this cam, what I'm wondering is, will its power band start at 1000 RPM and amplify the stock power band, or will the power band come on later in the RPM range? Forgot to mention just did a complete tune-up a couple of weeks ago on the car. Thanks for the help and tips guys.
