The original window regulator design used on the 84-85 is vastly inferior to the later design. The newer-style regulator used in the 86-96 can be easily installed in the 85, you just need to drill two additional holes in the bottom of the door panel, which is easy since they're fiberglass (use a brass drill bit).

Correction: 1984-1986's came with the original ribbon style regulators. 1987 and up were equipped with the improved scissors style regulators..
Could it be that a previous owner before you stuck an incorrect motor in there, and it just happened to work for some period of time? I ask that because the ribbons for 1984-86 all have the same tooth count. This is proven by the fact that they all take the same ribbon, and the tooth count doesn't vary.
If I were in your shoes, I would order the correct motor (mentioned above)and a new replacement ribbon. You will remove any doubt everything is correct.
