The 85-89 air intake housings were very restrictive because of the bottle neck over the radiator. Even my "little" 350 with a ZZ430 clone was running out of air. After converting to MAP and eliminating the mass air flow sensor my MAP KPa was dropping into the 80's at under 5k rpm's. I found nothing available in the aftermarket that I liked so I built my own. It has a 4" tube to the throttle body. Now my MAP is still 98 KPa at 6200 rpm's using the stock filter. It could be built using a larger filter.
You're going to be stuck making your own custom intake. I believe Joby built one that has a cone style filter in front of the radiator.
I just use cone style filters in front of the turbos on the 85.
^^^^ Mine is setup similarly in my 84 LS swapped car. Later slanted back rad/fan setup with C6 LS3 Airaid cold air kit and 4" air tube, LS3 card style MAF and a hole cut into the shroud for the filter.
I would like to see what the OP is dealing with under his hood. I looked through some of his previous posts and it looks like it may be a custom setup.
How much benefit is their to swapping to the angle radiator and fan setup on an early car?
What all is needed to do the swap and what all needs to be done? There are a lot more intake options with the angled radiator and fan setup.
