Hey guys! Been browsing the forums for years and finally made the account. I have an 86 Coupe 4+3 DN.
I’ve owned this car for a year now. I basically got it running and sounding good. I bought the kit from Batee . Com to replace the nasty old lcd screen with better bulbs and the special film to restore it. Everything lights up, RPM’s read correctly, so does gas indicator. However the MPH only ever reads 0. My first thought is maybe the VSS. But figured I’d jump down the rabbit hole and ask the “pros”.
other notable things that may help.
It never reads actual distance I can go (Expected mileage per tank) or (Distance to empty)
Yes it does sound like a VSS issue of sorts! Could be just a bad connection at the VSS or maybe needs a VSS. The early VSS with the center connect Weather-Pac has been NLA/Obsolete for a very long time. Do you have the FSM so you could do diagnostics? The early VSS is also somewhat 'fragile' and some have pretty much destroyed it in the removal.

I do have the 2 book field service manual. However looking at the electrical version can be a pain to understand. When I’m underneath the car I typically find a few “rogue” wires either unattached or clipped. I’ll check it out for sure. If this is a VSS problem I saw a possibility of removing it and testing with a multimeter.
is This a true way to detect a bad VSS?
Last but not least. If it’s dead. Any alternatives to fixing this issue? Buy a NEW OLD STOCK?
