Depends do you have the FX3 ride control version or the standard shocks? Bilstein can rebuild both. Do you autocross or heavy drag? If not stick with the Bilsteins, if you do search for some posts on shocks and there is a wealth of information already on who likes what shock and for what..........use your judgement.........Me ....? Bilsteins all the way

Actually, in '96 only the adjustable ride is called F45 Real Time Damping. The shocks are Delco brand, and are not rebuildable by Bilstein, or anyone that I could find.
If you want to maintain the ride control feature you need to buy the same F45 shocks from a dealer. Any of the online/discount places (Lake Chevrolet, Jeff Kopp, etc) can supply them for around $800 for the set.
If you don't have ride control, or want to get rid of it, I have been told that you can retro-fit regular shocks and simply leave the F45 plug disconnected.
I also recommend Bilsteins for non-adjustable shocks. They ride and handle great. KYBs are cheap but the ride is really rough, and they don't handle any better than Bilsteins.
I have a question. How can you tell if shocks are bad? I've had my 96 CE for less than a year. I don't have a reference point on what new or good shocks should feel like. Is there a shock test I can do like the old bounce test?
