While trying to decide which scantool/software to buy I took the '96 LT4 to AutoZone and had them pull the code. It was P1416, and their little printout says Port Air Circuit Malfunction. No noticeable decrease in performance or driveability, BTW.
Any guesses?
I had them clear it, and will see if it comes back, but I still plan to get some scanning equipment in the meantime.
Thanks,
Jeff
Re: SES Code P1416 on '96 LT4...what is this? (War Machine)
The printout is correct. P1416 is a code for the AIR sytem bank 2.
Thanks for the info! Is Bank 2 left or right (or other)?
I guess I'll see if it comes back on...only drove it about 8 miles since the reset.
Anyone have a similar experience that can point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Jeff
Re: SES Code P1416 on '96 LT4...what is this? (no_radio)
Bank 1 is driver's side, bank 2 is passenger.
Most common cause of P1416 is a bad AIR check valve; the bank 2 valve is behind the intake manifold near the firewall.
Other causes I believe can include restrictions in the passenger side lines, but IMHO that is generally unlikely; I don't know how such a large object could ever make it that far. HTH.
Re: SES Code P1416 on '96 LT4...what is this? (JasonL)
I had this one on my 1996. Seems there were a few things it could have been but it was the AIR check valve. The passenger side one is at the top of the motor at the rear of the intake valve. Really easy to get to.
Removal was a hassle, supporting the pipe on the passenger side of the valve. I ended up having a buddy hold the wrench on the pipe side while I used an impact gun to get it loose.
A new valve is ~12.00 from GM. If you are cheap you can soak the old valve in Carb cleaner overnight and it should be like new. I cleaned mine to clear the code/verify the fix and then installed a new valve.
With the valve level it must accumulate moisture more than the driver side valve and gum up.
