My 89 has started running way too rich. It has always run a little too rich since I put oversized injectors without matching the prom (lesson learned). But now something has happened, which makes it not want to start sometimes.. The problem is intermittent, but when it decides not to start, you can smell that it is loading up with fuel. I checked spark, and it isn't sending any codes. Someone told me it might be the MAF, but I think it would have sent a code, not sure. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
Does it run rich all the time, and just especially so at startup, or just at startup? It is possible for the MAF or O2 sensor to be off enough to notice a rich condition without them throwing codes.
check to see your canister solenoid isn't purging at idle. That will really fatten up the mixture.
:iagree:
Depending on if all the lines are routed correctly and if the solenoid is operating properly or not, you can have some weird problems with mixture.
I had quite a mass amount purged just off of idle. Ran vacuum lines correctly, checked the canister to make sure it was still ok, checked the purge solenoid, put it all back together, and it was perfect.
Worst case scenario is like what Bills86Coupe experienced. His fuel started to get pretty darn hot in the gas tank due to pressure buildup and the tank was hot to the touch. It could be an injector leaking down or a faulty fuel pressure regulator, but purge is one of the things usually overlooked.
