1986 alternator humming

1986 alternator humming
Hello all,
When I bought my 86 the guy said he put a new alternator in it. I noticed humming but thought it was the fuel pump running. (Humming with the ignition on car not running)I traced it down to the alternator. It f I pull the plug on the side and turn on the ignition it does not hum. I tried running the wiring from the manual but it shows all three wires on the one diagram then it goes to where is says see power distribution. I go to that diagram and it only shows the two red ones not the brown. Any ideas what to check or where to start?
