I hope this question falls under tech so I have it in the correct section. I am replacing the seat belts in my 91 L98 Coupe. I did this once before, but as soon as I moved my seat back it basically crushed the seat bealt retractor assembly. Can anyone offer a suggestion to prevent this? Can any seat belt retractor be mounted on the pillar or only a special type? Is this idea even recommended (safety issue etc).

Almost every car manufacturer specifically designes each interior with a specific belt for safety.
With that said. Many manufacturer's had cookie cutter models. Example. GM, the regal, caprice, Parisienne, main difference sub company, olds Pontiac, Chev. Past time now.
Also. The vette shares no common ground.
Hence your aftermarket belt was crushed.
The vette is first in line other models release the next year.
