Default Thrust bearing question

I had my engine put back together and ready to go in the car tonight, but then I noticed some play in the crank shaft. So I took the oil pan off and looked at the thrust bearing. The bearing has some grooves on the side that goes toward the crank. Here are couple of pictures. I measured the end play and it was a lot more then it should be. Is this normal wear? The engine has about 50k miles on it.

that bearing looks like it's wiped out, even the surface that rides on the crank journal`, hard to see it in the picture but it looks like its down to the backing surface, you need to check this out, mike the crank etc.

Maybe it's the light, or the angle, but to, me that baby looks HAMMERED! Why was the engine out, apart? If the main caps were off, this should have been caught. Good you checked it before it was too late. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!

I would at the least put new main bearings in it.

I had the engine out because I was doing the clutch, cam, heads, oil pump, springs, and replacing all the seals and gaskets. I didn't have the main caps off. I did change the oil pump but didn't even think about checking the main bearings (I will make sure I do that next time I have an engine apart). Anyway, I replaced all the main bearings, and now the end play is well within the specs. Finished that this morning and the motor is finally back in the car
