88 with a 383 and 700 trans. 8" balancer....entire suspension is new and motor mounts..<500 miles on entire build.
So this year id have a weird noise when it started cold. After about a minute tops it would go away...took belt off and it was still there. This is what I found....
I can think of 10 things that might cause this. i didnt wanna post this until I dove into it a little more, but figured I'd see what anyone has to say....im winterizing 200 boats so I'm busy as hell, but this weekend I'm gonna try to get balancer off...I was hoping maybe something fell in there but can't get a good pic until crank pulley is off...
Was hoping to get more miles this year before it gets too cold, but looking not its not gonna happen...
When I installed by motor many years ago it had an 8" balancer. I came up with three options: notch the cross member, install thin spacers between the motor mounts and the block, or replace the balancer with a smaller one. I chose to go with the smaller balancer. With age the motor mounts can sag a little.

Thanks...all of those I thought as well. Funny, engine been in since 17, always was close but it cleared...I really was hoping the car just settled as the other scenarios in my head are bad....the engine was balanced complete, can I just change the balancer out without taking them to be matched? Never had to change balancer size before.
I wonder why the noise went away? I would think the balancer would get hot and expand and the noise would get worse. Dan
All I could think of is the crank naturally wants to move forward.. so that would be a very worn thrust bearing on the crank......its just touching the ridge on the k member. And funny I even saw it as the paint on the balancer is barely scraped off..thats why I hoped something got pinched in there but don't think so.
10 years old but only installed under a load since 2017, and <500 miles on the entire car.
But still going to see if they budge. I can see my air filter and under heavy acceleration (built 383), the engine dosent seem to be twisting anymore than usual.

Why not take it to a machine shop and have them cut a 45 deg relief cut there ? Or a friend with a lathe ? If it is indicated in true (good machine shop practice) you won't change the way the balancer is balanced as equal amounts of material would be removed all the way around.
In fact, you already have a relief cut going as it is.
That is what I would do.
This thread talked about the same thing. Talked about cutting the frame for clearance. I hate cutting on a frame, gives it a place to start rusting (depending on where you live). Since you say you are winterizing boats, you must be close to some water, and humidity, and changing weather.

Funny you say that. I have a lathe. I file things all the time while turning them. The file i have works perfect for that. I didnt wanna post that i actually have room to do it in the car while engine is running..obviously dangerous, but i do have alot of room to work with....
Yeah, I have filed 1000's of things when I worked in the trade 45 years ago. But when I wanted something to maintain balance, etc. I would always cut it. Then it is precise.
Of course I was used to working with tolerances of +.0000 or -.0003, so I always did (and still do) stuff as precise as I can.

I hear ya. I try to be as accurate as I can with my 40 year old Atlas 12x36, but never need to make something dead on accurate. Plus mostly machine aluminum, so my iron bits are not so good these days...it just kills me how little its touching. Going to a smaller balancer and having the engine rev up a little quicker is appealing, but being a 383 the 8" really seemed the way to go.
Do you have an industrial supply house close by ? A high speed steel lathe blank shouldn't be that expensive, in fact they are not. Do you have a Grainger close by

So it seems the motor mount passenger side has a decent amount of play. Gonna change them 1st and see if it helps this issues....ill follow up with results....thanks everyone
