Figured I’d make a post about this. I have an 85 corvette, and I’ve read and heard that the ECU’s in 85’s are either tricky to tune or just not worth tuning for a multitude of reasons. I imagine it’s possible to tune them, so I just figured I’d ask if it’s worth swapping a 86+ ecu in, getting a stand-alone like a megasquirt, or just keeping the 85 and getting a chip. Thoughts?
That depends. Why do you need it tuned, are you planning on doing extensive mods?
I have Holley EFI in my 85 but used it because I was turbocharging it. The Holley does what I need for managing boost much better than the stock EFI or an 86+ ECU would.
You can still find tuners that can burn you a new PROM but they are getting harder to find.
I plan on doing enough that i’m going to need to be able to tune it reliably. At some point i’d like to turbocharge it but that’s way off in the future. Is the Holley EFI system worth the price?

That depends upon what you're using it for. I have the HP and an expansion module that adds more inputs and outputs. Mine controls the fuel and ignition but also controls the boost, fans, overdrive engagement, shift light, additional warning light, and a few other things I can't think of at the moment. I also use the data logging and have a bunch of additional sensors for more info. I think it's a great system but use it for a lot. You could also use the Terminator X and spend less money.
Also: there isn't an off the shelf turbocharger system for our cars. You'll either have to go with a remote mounted turbo or fabricate/have fabricated a system of your own. (I built the twin turbo setup in my 85 myself.) There are centrifugal supercharger kits still available if you're planning on running boost.
