Default spare tire solution

My '93 coupe came with a doenut tire packed in a compartment underneath, and to the rear, below the gas tank. The tire is shot. The tire alone was $200 at Tire rack. Will a regular 17" fit in the compartment? I don't have one to try. I know the regular corvette rims and tires won't fit, But I don't like doenut tires. But if that's all that will fit in the compartment, I need to replace it. Will any 5 lug, 17" GM rim and doenut tire fit? Maybe the salvage yard would be a cheaper solution. Has anyone come up with a better solution for this?

Thanks

The stock tires DO fit if you move the hanger to the lower position. It is however much more visible from behind.

What you need to verify is that your 'new' spare tire works with the Corvette brakes.

What is the problem with your existing spare? Just the tire? Fixing that would be the simple solution. It does not have to be a spare tire.

I considered a full size spare also for my '96, but ended up going with this solution:

https://modernspare.com/product/1984...e-kit-options/

Rationale:
  • Full size spare will hang down pretty low, I don't like the way that would look.
  • Regular donut tires are limited to 50MPH, the one offered by modernspare is rated to 80MPH. Important for me because much of my driving is a 72 mile commute (one way) on highways.
  • It's on a relatively light Aluminum rim that doesn't look like total rubbish.
  • Started by a car enthusiast who was bemoaning the very problems that people like us are bemoaning.
Of course I have no interest in the company, just found em online, ordered a tire, got it, was happy, checked the pressure, and stuffed it in back until the day comes. Probably I found them from reading on this forum somewhere, but I cannot remember if that is or is not the case.

Other alternatives are to do a spare tire and carrier delete and carry a can of Fix-a-Flat, or if you're really into fixing tires with traffic streaming by/around you, maybe a plug kit and a portable 12V air compressor. Those options were not appealing to me, but others might think they're Just The Thing.

Had the same issue with my 90, spare was shot. Bought a compact spare from Tire Rack, Continental $153.00, size T155/70R17. Had a friend mount it on the rim. Problem solved.

I did the same a few years ago. I also added an extension of the stem to be able to check the pressure without dropping the tire. Dan

You could get a wheel adapter and use a 2012 up Malibu steel wheel. 5x120mm to 4x4.75 adapter.

Been driving for 60 years and never once used or needed a spare tire. Don't need no stinking spare...Just saying

Maybe a poll on spare tire usage?

Cheapest way? Camry spare and mount it on your rim. I had no spare so I used the Camry wheel with an adapter. It clears a 13 inch front brake.
