My '93 coupe came with a doenut tire packed in a compartment underneath, and to the rear, below the gas tank. The tire is shot. The tire alone was $200 at Tire rack. Will a regular 17" fit in the compartment? I don't have one to try. I know the regular corvette rims and tires won't fit, But I don't like doenut tires. But if that's all that will fit in the compartment, I need to replace it. Will any 5 lug, 17" GM rim and doenut tire fit? Maybe the salvage yard would be a cheaper solution. Has anyone come up with a better solution for this?
Full size spare will hang down pretty low, I don't like the way that would look.
Regular donut tires are limited to 50MPH, the one offered by modernspare is rated to 80MPH. Important for me because much of my driving is a 72 mile commute (one way) on highways.
It's on a relatively light Aluminum rim that doesn't look like total rubbish.
Started by a car enthusiast who was bemoaning the very problems that people like us are bemoaning.
Of course I have no interest in the company, just found em online, ordered a tire, got it, was happy, checked the pressure, and stuffed it in back until the day comes. Probably I found them from reading on this forum somewhere, but I cannot remember if that is or is not the case.
Other alternatives are to do a spare tire and carrier delete and carry a can of Fix-a-Flat, or if you're really into fixing tires with traffic streaming by/around you, maybe a plug kit and a portable 12V air compressor. Those options were not appealing to me, but others might think they're Just The Thing.
Had the same issue with my 90, spare was shot. Bought a compact spare from Tire Rack, Continental $153.00, size T155/70R17. Had a friend mount it on the rim. Problem solved.

I did the same a few years ago. I also added an extension of the stem to be able to check the pressure without dropping the tire. Dan
