I use Snap On and Tech 2. But there are others that can do it. If you live by a chain auto parts store, they might even lend you one to use. I would check, because you're making a big decision.

I agree. I’m fighting as hard as possible not to change the Opti, only to find out it’s something else… I’ll see if my scanner can connect to it. If it does, should it read something live as I’m cranking it?
There is an info PID that shows low resolution signal, and the high resolution signal. So the scan tool should pick it up. There is a fault code for it, but I would trust seeing it on a scan tool. IMHO.

Unfortunately, my scanner (Innova 3160d) is only for OBDII, not OBDI. Your scanners can actually log PID info for a 95 LT1? I’ll have to figure out if any auto parts stores here lend out scanners…
No Tach movement while cranking indicates Optispark failure
Hi FrankieD,
I just finished installing my new Opti. Before installing the water pump, etc, I hooked it up and gave it a try. It barked to life immediately! Started quicker than it has since I’ve owned it. Looks like I found the problem. I followed the diagnostic chart in the FSM, and it determined that it was either the distributor or the wiring to the distributor. Although I had the new Opti in my possession, I was trying to convince myself that it was bad, before signing up for all the work. Now I’m glad I did. Put new seals on the front cover, as well. Hope to have it all together to road test in a day or two.
Happy to report that the 95 is running fantastic! Topped off the coolant and double checked for leaks, none found! Might be my imagination, but it seems to run stronger than I remember since I’ve owned it. I suppose the Opti may have been starting to fail a while ago, or perhaps the new fuel pump, which is running higher pressure than the old one, is a major reason. No matter, all seems well, and now I’ll start taking progressively longer rides to re-build my confidence in it’s reliability.
