What transmission do you have attached to the LT1? Are you using the original '76 gage package wired to the opti-spark? If you have installed LT1 gages, the problem may be in the opti-spark ignition system, or the tachometer filter. I understand these questions don't solve your problem, but you may have a complicated "fix". Good luck.
Using the 4L60e tranny and still using the '76 gauges. Prior to the LT1 install, the tach ran off the HEI coil...does the LT1 use the coil, opti-spark or PCM for the tach?
Is there any type of "filter" or "Multiplier/reducer" for the tach? DataMaster and AutoXray both read EXACTLY half of what my tach reads...
The tach receives pulses from the coils (there are multiple coils) in concert with the Engine Control Module (ECM), and other components. I don't know if your old tach is compatible with, or can be adapted to, the LT1 electronics.
