I went to buy and ignition switch with key and it said it was coded. 85 didnt have a vats key so what is coded.
also is there a spring inside the lock to return the key in start mode.
The new lock comes with keys, I just want to make sure the 85 did not use a "VATS" resistor system.
'85 = NO VATS
The key that was with your newly purchased cylinder should have the 'key code' documented in some fashion. Stamped on the cylinder, if an original a 'knock-out' on the key blank OR perhaps a hanging tag.
I noticed that there are a few switches available. most say with console shift. Would that include automatic and manual shifters. Iam wondering if my lockout rod for my 4+3 is tied to that switch making it a unique part.
Return of the 'key' is a combination of the actual ignition switch (on the column), the rod and the rack from the switch, the plastic pawl gear and the unusually shaped spring included in this GM kit sold by many 7844651 is the GM. The spring included actually maintains a 'preload' on shaft, the pawl gear to the actual ignition cylinder that you've purchased. Your 4+ has a column lock feature that is separate from your original question.
I looked at the parts in that kit and it looks like a timex watch rebuild. Is the tilt column rebuild going to be a new hobby for me or is it straight forward.
So I am at a point where I can remove the tumbler with one screw but I am afraid if I go further into it I may have a ton of parts and pieces all over the place. Anyone here do this job before and can advise. Also I noticed the plastic spring retainer has a seal like an o-ring but its smashes against to bosses. Did someone install it wrong? Thanks
