Default Head castings

There’s probably a million threads about this but yeah. I’m looking for some good flowing Cast iron heads for my 85. Anytime I ask someone about this they recommend me vortecs and the SD base, but that really limits my choice of intakes. Vortecs are cheap as hell at all the junkyards near me, but the base is still taxed. All i’m asking is for some good casting numbers, just need to write myself a list of options and go from there. thanks.

Are you looking for stock heads or aftermarket. Also would you consider aluminum heads stock or aftermarket?

https://www.chevyhardcore.com/tech-s...20ton%20trucks.Types of GM Vortec Heads

L31 Vortecs comes in two different casting numbers, 10239906 (#906) or 12558062 (#062). Originally, the stock #906 casting head was available in two versions. One version had an Inconel exhaust seat with single angle valve grind and was available on one ton trucks. The other version was the traditional three angle valve grind. Other than that, the #906 is the same as the #062 head.

are you keeping TPI? are you going with headers? stock TPI flows 196 cfm. stock heads flow 196cfm.
I have summit racing/dart 165ss heads. flow 237cfm at .500 intake, 138cfm exhaust at .500 out of box. after basic bowl blend of exhaust is 180cfm at .500.

They can be stock off another car, but the 80’s corvette irons suck. Also not trying to do aluminum. I wanna go forced induction at some point and don’t want to risk warping a nice set of AFR’s.

I’m keeping TPI for right now but within the next 6 months I’m going to try to get a different intake. How do I pair heads? Little confusing to me. Where do I need to be matching flow numbers?

I know about the vortec heads. Issue is the bolt pattern for the intake doesn’t work with tuned port intakes. Scoggin Dickey makes a base for it, but then I can only use the stock plenum and runners (POS) so it limits my use of intakes. Good heads i just wish they had some with the normal bolt pattern.

the only thing I know about forced induction is that the piston rings need more gap to prevent breaking piston.
