Default Block question

I am going to add a blower to my current setup, and am going to buy another block to build up so I can just swap it in. I was wondering if I should get the 4 bolt or the 2 bolt. I know you can splay the cap on the 2 bolt and make it stronger than the 4 bolt, but how much hp can each setup handle(2 bolt, 4 bolt, 2 bolt splayed)?

With a blower, I would use splayed 4-bolt caps. I bought a 2-bolt
block out of an f-body and installed 4-bolt spayed caps for about
$450, including the caps.

I would have to say a High Performance engine would have to use 4 bolts, thats a must, how are you building your engine? Are you going 383 or BIG BLOCK???

The outside bolts, when splayed, anchor into a stonger part of the
block. From what I understand, more load is spread to the outside main
cap webbing. I would guess that all aftermarket "race" blocks have them.
In my case, The increased cost of adding splayed caps was partially
offset by using a less expensive, and easier to find 2-bolt block. ($150)
A great mod for people needing a very strong bottom-end... Hi-Revers,
strokers, and blown motors.

Oh, and no big block and no stroker motor. I already have a vortech s/c to put on, but I want to forge the bottom end and maybe put a head/cam package on it after I get the bottom end done.

Ummm... If you're going to take your motor out to do a forged bottom end, why wouldn't you go to a 383? I've done a little research (going to do a top-end and a 8psi ProCharger) and from the conversations I've had, a blown 383 makes awesome power! :)

I would have to agree, go all out if your going to forge everything. ALso If your going to forge all the parts, then you might as well go 383 and low comopression like 8.5 to 1, Then that way you could up the boost whenever you want or if you change your SC you could run more boost and make more power. This way would save you money b/c you wouldnt need to buy more parts to handle that power or get lower compression pistons b/c you already have them :yesnod:

I'd say with a 383CID SBC and with some high flow heads, intake and exhuast with a 15-17psi SC, I think you'll be able to reach the 650HP Mark eaisly. :yesnod: :yesnod:

Well I am going to have to do some research on a 2 bolt splayed to 4 bolt 383 now.

Go with the 4 bolt. Splaying the 2 bolt is not a good idea. The splay pulls at parts of the block and can actually distort the block, kinda like flexing. cant remember exactly what my tuner was saying about the 2 bolt and splaying but he said stay away. 4 bolts are in demand for a reason. :)

Absolutely Wrong!!!!! Splayed caps are the strongest way to go, and
they do not distort the block. Talk to any good race engine builder, and
they will recommend splayed caps for the strongest bottom-end.
