Inside the alternator, I feel with what you have asked and done to replace is within your capabilities If you need to replace it.
It's actually kinda fun to replace, you split the case things go pop and fly. You think great now what. No big deal as long as you have a WD-40 spray tube to cage the brushes then everything falls back together.
