I have searched and read a lot on the roller rockers for my 92 LT1, but have a few questions that I couldn't find answers to.
1. If I go with 96 LT4 RRs I need to also get the 10mm studs. Will the 96 LT4 RR arms clear the 92 valve covers without trimming them?
2. I found Proform Roller Rockers on Summit that are 3/8s, self aligning, 1.6 for SBC, and Narrow body part 66915. Their fit section says it fits SBC 1st Gen and Gen II LT engines, but doesn't list the Corvette with vin P. Will these fit if I trim the valve covers?
3. The 96 LT4 RRs only need to be torqued and you don't set the valve lash. Is this true with other roller rockers? I like the idea of just torqueing them down and being done.
I appreciate all the input.
Where did you get the LT4 rockers? GM made a bad batch and replaced them with 1.6 that require setting valve lash. Don't mean to scare you but something to consider. Be careful what your buying.
1 and 2, trimming the drip tabs is easy and won't affect anything. Unless you have the stamped steel then you'll need to trim some of the supports
Answer to 3, yes only the orignal Lt4 rockers require no valve lash.
Another thing to consider is tuning, the roller rockers will cause false knock. So a tune would be required to desensitize it. Or run a spoof.
Thank you for the reply. I searched a bunch of posts about the 96 LT4 rockers and read about the recall. I didn't read about the replacements needing valve lash set. I haven't found a set, yet. Another member sent me a pm a couple of months ago in response to a FS ad I replied to. I had a bunch of false KR I was chasing. I bought all the tuning hardware and a couple of chips from moates in August. I've gotten as far as data logging to see I had KR 11-15 degrees from idle to 3500 rpm on a stock engine. I bought another home tuned chip from another member that was out of a 92 6 speed like mine and that cured my KR problem. I still am going to do my own tuning so if the RRs cause that KR again I have the tuning hardware to address it.
SO just to be clear the Proform 66915 3/8 1.6 will fit with trimming? They are $235 a set on Summit.
Not to offend anyone but the Proform is a cheaply made setup, and if you scatter needle bearings they can end up in the cam tunnel tearing things up, or other undesirable places. Don't go cheap, I think the best is to look for a steel body that clears the centerbolt towers from a reputable company such as Crane. I put in the not-quite-as-cheap Scorpion 1.5/1.6 rockers as I didn't know what else would fit at the time, but I don't think I can recommend them as they are heavy and are known to fail also.
Scorpion 1.6 RR narrow body will bolt right on, follow the directions from scorpion to set the preload on the lifter, no retuning of your computer is required. I am unfamiliar with the valve cover on the 92, but if it is the composite you'll have to trim the oil drip tabs. Do not go larger than 1.6 RR because the stock springs will bind and can severely damage the engine.
I appreciate the replies. I was hoping the proform weren't a cheap set since Summit carries them. I have looked at the steel ones too. Same thing, they are 3/8s, self aligning, 1.6 and say fit the SBC, but the "check your fit" doesn't include the 92 LT1. The 92 LT1 valve cover is a unique one that is similar to the 91 and older. It is made out of that porous material that I think is pot metal.
I just noticed Summit has a review feature. A couple of people posted reviews on the Proforms and how the self aligning tab spun out of place. One guy uploaded a pic of the tab slicing through the top of the rocker arm. So that's a no on those.

I used the Scorpion narrow series with AFR Heads and 1990 L98 Valve Covers. Had to machine the Drippers off and a few more spots. I figured if AFR sold them then they are pretty good stuff. The LT4 Rockers were made by Crane but a GM design. Crane never sold them to the public. They were made to be installed quickly on the production line and lack the advantages of being able to adjust them.
