Sure, you could do it (especially with a 93 unit like your profile shows). They don't have the center reverse lock-out rod. Or...you could buy one from ZR1 Specialties (ZFDoc.com). The advantage to a fully modified shifter is the bottomside is also modified to LENGTHEN the movement -- further reducing shifter travel. Hurst also made a version that (I believe) is still available. So, you have 3 options. If you don't want to "monkey" with a shift install, you COULD cut the shifter off. I'm pretty sure 1 or 2 have tried that over the years.
FWIW, I'm sure you'd be way more impressed (like I am) with a true short-throw unit.

1993 and 1994 still have the reverse lockout. 1995 was the first year without. Hurst no longer sells a ZF shifter. Core still sells direct or you can find it on eBay.

Yeah...I knew Hurst was a trick to find nowadays. Thx for refreshing my memory on the change-over to the non-pull-up shifter style. I was thinking it corresponded to the swap from black to blue tag tranny.
In that case (to the OP), I wouldn't attempt to cut off the shifter -- while it's in the car. The likelihood of getting metal shavings down/around the center pin/rod would be too high. And, if you couldn't tell, I don't like the idea anyway. If you want a short-throw, get a good one. Don't make your own.
