Default Closed loop.... When?

After starting a cold L98 engine. at what point does the engine go to closed loop?
I'm just interested as I have O2 sensor problems and the SES light comes on after I have been driving for a bit and an explanation on this would clarify a few things
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim, go to 65Z01's site and click on the field service mode link. His site is chock full of good L98 information.

That will explain why the SES light comes on after it warms up. Just trying to get my head round it to make sure I fix the right bit first time.
Thanks for that.

Code 44

This is an 89. How many O2 sensors does it have? I am getting conflicting info from dealers and manuals.

One O2 sensor on the drivers side y-pipe near the exhaust manifold.

Code 44 means ecm has gone closed loop, but O2 voltage is below 0.2V for more than 50 seconds.

Scanner could be a real help! I'd check for a shorted O2 sensor wire. Also you could be running very, very lean.

A source of false air into the exhaust such as an exhaust leak near the O2 sensor, faulty AIR diverter valve might cause the sensor to see a false lean condition. You could also disconnect the MAF sensor and see if the false lean condition goes away.

{edit} Could also have a shorted O2 sensor, never had one fail that way.

Good Luck

Pete
